Upon entering the park, visitors can stop at the kiosk to pay a small entrance fee and park in the designated area in front of the barns. One popular 5.2-mile double loop hike takes hikers through fields, streams, and up the ridge of Lost Mountain, offering breathtaking views along the way.
The history of Lost Mountain dates back to the 18th century, with various landowners and notable figures making their mark on the land. In the mid-20th century, the area faced potential development, but thanks to the efforts of Paul Mellon, the land was preserved and eventually gifted to Virginia State Parks. Sky Meadows State Park officially opened in 1983, offering visitors a chance to explore the natural beauty and historical significance of Lost Mountain and its surroundings. Reviews
"The park was much more enjoyable when dogs were prohibited on the trails. Now they are a nuisance. Too many unleashed dogs. Why in the park picnic area so tree less ? The picnic are needs to be moved back to the old 1820 house with the great views. The Mt Bleak house needs to be turned in to a visitor center and nature center. No one visits the park with the expectation to experience history or old house architecture. Too many cows now. A few cows and. Chickens are fine."
"My daughter and I had a wonderful time up in the mountains it's good to get away from cell phones and all the other things that detract you this wonderful man that we have."
"Gorgeous section of Sky Meadows. Love that you can hike next to cows during the summer, and the birdwatching is great on these trails. Trails are mowed fairly regularly. Definitely check yourself (and your dogs) for ticks and treat your clothing if you can."
"This place is a hidden gem and is often overshadowed by Sky Meadows State Park. Take the deviation to Lost Mountain parking lot before you enter Sky Meadow State Park. There is a kisok to pay fees, weekend 10$ charge is levied for vehicles, but it is unmanned, though Park rangers frequent the parking lot. There are ~ 8 spots for passenger cars and a separate lot for bus and trailers. DO NOT PARK IN THE space for trailers, we saw a park ranger issue ticket to a passenger car. There are 4 picnic tables with charcoal grill, a portable bathroom and non drinking water-tap. Decently maintained. There are plenty of trails, we did the Rolling meadows trail, it's beautiful. Do note the trails are for equestrians too and you can expect to see people on horses on trails."
"Lost mountain has great horse back and hiking trails. Nice parking lot for horse trailers. Good views of rolling mountains and fall colors. Some historical buildings."
