About the Business

Carvins Cove Natural Reserve

Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is a stunning park and tourist attraction located in Salem, Virginia, just seven miles from the north side of Roanoke. This vast natural reserve spans over 12,000 acres of hardwood and mixed pine forests, featuring a 630-acre reservoir and 60 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The reserve is a vital piece of Virginia's green infrastructure, providing a source of fresh water for the region.

Visitors can access the reserve through three parking lot entrances: the Boat Landing at the Reservoir, Bennett Springs, and Timberview. Passes are required for anyone over the age of 16, and can be purchased online or in-person at the Boat Landing office. The reserve is open seven days a week, offering different hours based on the season.

Carvins Cove's extensive mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian trails can be accessed from the Bennett Springs Parking Lot, which provides amenities such as parking, trail condition signs, and restrooms. The reserve's rich history dates back to the 18th century when William Carvin received a land grant that would later become the primary water source for the City of Roanoke.

Today, Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is managed by the City of Roanoke's Department of Parks and Recreation, with trails planned and maintained by local non-profit volunteer groups. The reserve's conservation easement protects over 11,000 acres of open space, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Whether you're looking for a leisurely hike, an exhilarating mountain bike ride, or a peaceful horseback ride, Carvins Cove offers something for everyone to enjoy in the great outdoors.

"Quiet, nice, spacious, and green. Can bring your own boat/kayak/padding board or rent a boat/kayak before 630. Better go early."

"This place has incredible biking trails. I did a 12 mile hike. The trail is in great shape. It had lots of loops and ups and downs to keep things interesting. There are no views, but there are many lovely stream crossings."
