"Mohammad Jaghlit, my childhood pediatrician, saved my father’s life. As a kid, I was always getting strep throat. There is a genetic susceptibility to getting strep. So one day when I was in getting yet another penicillin shot, my dad mentioned to Dr. Jaghlit that he’d had strep as a kid, it morphed into rheumatic fever, that he’d had heart damage and had to spend almost a year flat on his back while his grandmother cared for him, and he didn’t want it happening to his kids. Dr. Jaghlit asked my dad a few questions, and learned that my dad didn’t have a cardiologist and wasn’t getting any medial treatment for his long-standing heart damage. Dr. Jaghlit asked a few more questions, and then made my dad wait in the waiting room, while he made a bunch of phone calls. He set my dad up with a cardiologist, made an appointment for him with that cardiologist, and that cardiologist got my dad on warfarin immediately. My dad (whose parents had been told he wouldn’t make it out of childhood) is now age 77. There is no way my dad would have made it this long had Dr. Jaghlit gone above and beyond 40 years or so ago and gotten my dad a cardiology appointment."
