About the Business

Eastern Promenade Trail

The Eastern Promenade Trail is a popular park and tourist attraction located along the Eastern Promenade in Portland, Maine, United States. This waterfront trail offers stunning views of the harbor and ocean, with benches and picnic tables conveniently placed along the route. Visitors can enjoy swimming at East End Beach, as well as using the public boat launch, toilets, and changing areas during the summer months. Dogs are welcome on the beach during the off-season.

With over 70 miles of trails and green space in Greater Portland, the Eastern Promenade Trail follows an old rail corridor and features parallel paved and stone dust paths that run along the water's edge. The trail is mostly flat, with a small rise near the Portland Water District treatment plant and Tukey's Bridge, where it connects to the Back Cove Trail. Kayaks and canoes can be stored on rental racks and launched from the beach or boat ramp.

Maintained by the City of Portland, the Eastern Promenade Trail is a great spot for outdoor recreation and enjoying the natural beauty of the area. The Fort Allen Steps are sponsored by Adopt-A-Trail partner Athletic Brewing Company. For more information, contact Portland Trails at 38 Diamond Street or call (207) 775-2411.

"While visiting Portland with my dog, I was searching for an easily accessible, fun place to walk my dog in the city. This was just the place! It’s a nice path along the marina, railway, and coastline. There’s tons of dogs, runners, bikers,… and everyone is very nice! There’s a couple of off leash sections, the best one being a little beach perfect for throwing the ball. The whole walk took me about an hour. Highly recommend this as a dog owner!"

"The best recreational trail in Portland, especially in the Old Port area. The trail connects you directly to the Old Port. The trail is paved and is well lit with street lamps. Great views of the ocean and harbor. There are several nice spots with benches and areas to sit and enjoy the views."

"Beautiful, easy walk/(run/bike) along the harbor coast. Dogs on leash areas too! Views of forts and historical artifacts plus history about the city was very interesting. Plus we saw a groundhog! Highly recommend."

"Loved this park! Absolutely serene walk along the shore with views of the islands. They have food trucks there for food and they have small beach areas along with a place to rent kayaks. Great place to get fresh air, walk your dog, run, bike, paddle board, or just sit near the water and contemplate life."
