"Disappointed. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Barasch based on all of the 5-star reviews, she is a nice person and takes time to answer questions but when I expressed concerns to her that my body might be post-menopause, her response was "you're too young." I told her that I was in menopause at age 33 and people as young as 24 years old can start experiencing menopause. (Women could lose their opportunity to become pregnant because Dr. Barasch does not have he knowledge of how to screen for fertility issues early on.) I informed Dr. Barasch that my body had no more eggs at age 39 and that I used a donor egg to become pregnant. She whispered to me "did you carry your child or did someone else get pregnant for you?" (BTW it was just me and her in the exam room. Her discomfort with the topic was uncomfortable to be around). *Educate yourself on the difference between donor egg and surrogacy. Don't assume that women's body can't get pregnant just because she uses a donor egg or a donated embryo. Fast forward to blood work results after my appointment, I told her on the phone that I reviewed my results online and it is indicating that my body is post menopause. Dr. Baracsh's response was, "yeah...boo." SO INSENSITIVE! (BTW a person is not postmenopausal until a full year has passed without a period.) *It might seem small but your words have a big impact, especially if your next patient is not yet aware of possible fertility issues. Don't practice outside of your scope. Be transparent. If you don't know something, say you don't know but you can find out or direct your patient to someone who knows more."
