About the Business

Welcome to the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), located in Battery Point, Castray Esplanade, 20. As a center of excellence for marine and Antarctic research, we are dedicated to advancing environmental understanding and promoting sustainable development for the benefit of Australia and the world.
At IMAS, our research goes beyond traditional scientific boundaries, encompassing both natural and social sciences. We take an interdisciplinary approach to teaching ocean and polar science, integrating the study of natural sciences with current practices in management, policy, and law. Our aim is to educate the next generation of internationally competitive scientists, policy makers, law makers, and globally aware citizens.
Community engagement is at the heart of our mission. We strive to improve the marine environments of our local, national, and international communities. Through our research and education programs, we work towards creating a better future for our oceans and the diverse ecosystems they support.
As a center of excellence for research and education, IMAS is known for its innovative and globally distinctive research. Our research is not only relevant but also addresses the pressing environmental challenges of our time. We pride ourselves on delivering first-class educational programs that produce highly trained scientists and researchers who can serve the needs of academic institutions, industry, government, and the community at large.
One of our esteemed researchers is Associate Professor Catriona Macleod, a benthic ecologist. Her research focuses on understanding coastal environmental interactions. With a particular interest in soft-sediment and reef ecosystems, Catriona investigates the environmental impacts on these delicate habitats.
At IMAS, we invite you to explore our website to learn more about our research, education programs, and the exciting work being conducted by our dedicated team of scientists and researchers. Join us in our mission to protect and preserve our marine environments for future generations.
Reviews
"Absolutely one of the marine research institutes of all time. They do some of the world’s science and definitely have a marine and Antarctic focus, with a location by the water. There are facilities and employees. And credit where credit is due, it would be remiss of me not to praise the generous three floor layout and unwaveringly Bolshevikian interior stylings. While perhaps lacking otherwise, it’s a must see for lovers of premodern scientific decor."
"Very informative. Well worth the (invited) visit"
"We bought along 2 visitors from Boston USA, excited to learn more about Handfish. The so called Exhibition was v underwhelming. An interesting timeline of discovery and loss; some bios of researchers and not much else. Hated the plastic decoy in the aquarium - tacky. Really disappointed not to be able to see a live specimen at Handfish Central."
"One of the best campuses in the southern hemisphere, and alongside is the brand new research ship"
"Often you'll see Australia's most well-known icebreaker, Aurora Australis, moored outside this building."
