Clough Island
β OpenClough Island is a park located in Superior, Wisconsin, United States, and is part of the St. Louis River Estuary. The Nature Conservancy has been working to protect this important area, which is the largest U.S. tributary to Lake Superior. The Estuary is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, including estuarine wetlands, aquatic habitats, and important breeding grounds for native birds and fish. Threats to the Estuary include habitat loss, sedimentation, and contamination from industrial activity. In 2010, TNC protected Clough Island, the largest island within the Estuary, which is crucial for wildlife such as migratory birds and lake sturgeon. The area is also popular for birdwatching, fishing, and hiking. Visitors can explore the Estuary by foot or boat, with many trails and entry points available on both sides. The St. Louis Estuary is a haven for over 230 bird species and is a critical stopover for migratory birds. TNC's work in the area focuses on protecting natural areas and working with landowners to conserve the unique habitats of the Estuary.
