Quadracci Pavilion by Santiago Calatrava
The Quadracci Pavilion by Santiago Calatrava is an iconic sculptural addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, located at 700 North Art Museum Drive in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. Designed by the renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the pavilion was inspired by the original building by Eero Saarinen and Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie-style architecture. Completed in 2001, the 142,050-square-foot structure houses a grand reception hall, auditorium, exhibition space, store, café, and parking. The highlight of the pavilion is the Windhover Hall, a grand reception hall reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral with flying buttresses, pointed arches, and a glass roof. The Burke Brise Soleil, the museum's signature wings, form a moveable sunscreen with a 217-foot wingspan made up of 72 steel fins. The entire structure weighs 90 tons and takes 3.5 minutes to open or close. The pavilion's design reflects Calatrava's vision of responding to the culture of the lake and creating a memorable image for the museum and the city.
