Mount Wood Castle and Cemetery
Mount Wood Castle and Cemetery is located at 53 Mount Wood Road in Wheeling, West Virginia, United States. Established in 1848, it is the oldest extant cemetery within the city limits of Wheeling. The cemetery was designed during the rural romantic movement, paying homage to its unique and significant topography overlooking both the Wheeling Creek Valley and the Ohio River Valley. Over the years, the cemetery has been a victim of vandalism and the effects of gravity, with many gravestones and monuments in need of preservation. In 2012, a grassroots movement of local organizations and volunteers began meeting to initiate preservation efforts. Wheeling Heritage wrote a nomination for the National Register of Historic Places in 2013, making Mount Wood the first cemetery in Wheeling to receive this recognition.
