Chickering Bog Natural Area
Chickering Bog Natural Area is a beautiful park and tourist attraction located in Plainfield, Vermont, just 15 minutes from the state capital of Montpelier. This wide-open peatland is surrounded by dark tamarack, spruce and fir forest, creating a peaceful and secluded atmosphere. Despite its name, Chickering Bog is actually a fen, fed by calcium-rich groundwater and springs. Visitors can explore a two-mile trail and boardwalk named after former director Bob Klein, which allows for up-close views of fen plants such as blue flag iris and showy lady's slipper orchids, as well as a variety of wildlife including bullfrogs, wood ducks, barred owls, and more. Chickering Bog is now recognized with a Class I Wetland Designation, highlighting its importance in conservation efforts. The area was fully protected in 2014, ensuring the preservation of its unique ecosystem. Visitors can easily access the natural area by following Route 2 and Route 14 from Montpelier, and can use the Avenza Maps app to track their position while exploring the trails.
