Washington-on-the-Brazos Amphitheater
The Washington-on-the-Brazos Amphitheater is located at 23400 Park Road 12 in Washington, Texas, United States. This historic site played a significant role in Texas history, as it was where representatives met in 1836 to declare independence from Mexico. Despite efforts to make Washington the capital of the Republic of Texas, the honor went to Austin, and the town eventually became a ghost town. In the early 1900s, efforts were made to acquire and improve historic sites related to Texas independence, leading to the creation of the State Park at Washington in 1916. During the Great Depression, government stimulus money and work relief programs helped improve the site, including the construction of a stone amphitheater. Today, the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site covers 293 acres and features interpretive trails, the Barrington Living History Farm, the Star of the Republic Museum, and a Visitor Center operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife. The site offers exhibits on the area's history and is a must-visit for those interested in Texas' fight for independence.
