Casa Blanca, The Original Texas White House
● ClosedCasa Blanca, The Original Texas White House, located in Laredo, Texas, is a historic park with a rich history dating back to 1754. Originally established by Tomás Sánchez de la Barrera y Gallardo, captain of Laredo, the White House was constructed of caliche blocks and served as a settlement and later a mission. The land was granted to the Montemayor family in 1807 and was used as a ranchhouse until 1852. Various families occupied the house over the years, with a post office operating on the site from 1860 to 1866. In 1896, the land was purchased by John L. Wade, who established Wade City adjacent to Casa Blanca. Despite efforts to develop Wade City, it did not prosper and by 1914, its population had decreased significantly. The post office ceased operation in 1922, and by 1945, only ruins remained of Casa Blanca. Today, Casa Blanca is a non-profit institution dedicated to preserving the history of the area and relies on contributions from the community for support. Don't miss the opportunity to join the 23rd Annual San Jacinto Symposium on April 26-27 in Houston, TX, to delve into history and scholarship with fellow academics, professionals, and history enthusiasts.
