Welcome to the Whitehead Preserve at Dundery Brook, a magical hideaway nestled in Little Compton, Rhode Island. Located at 29 Meetinghouse Lane, this enchanting park and tourist attraction offers visitors a serene escape into nature's beauty. With its careful, historic plantings of native shrubs and wildflowers, the preserve is a haven for birds, butterflies, and other pollinators, creating a vibrant tapestry of life.
Explore the preserve's easy, winding paths that circle three charming farm ponds, each surrounded by woods and open meadows. These outdoor galleries invite quiet exploration and appreciation of the natural world. The fully accessible wooden boardwalk is perfect for younger children and those with limited mobility, offering a scenic journey over forested wetlands and swamps. Please note that dogs are not permitted to protect the sensitive ecology.
Enjoy a leisurely 2-mile trail system, starting at the trailhead kiosks that introduce you to the wonders of the preserve. Hope's Path (0.7 miles) connects the main trailhead to the boardwalk, which meanders south and provides stunning views of the swamp's hidden treasures. Blanche’s Path (0.6 miles) offers a grassy route along Bumblebee Pond, ideal for birdwatching.
The Whitehead Preserve is surrounded by conserved land, protecting water quality in Briggs Marsh downstream. This diverse forest community is home to great oaks, beeches, tupelos, and a variety of wetland plants. Bird enthusiasts can spot over 60 species, including warblers, hawks, and owls. Wildlife such as deer, foxes, and frogs thrive here, making every visit a unique experience.
The preserve's rich history dates back to the 1930s when Blanche "Inchy" Borden and her husband began acquiring land, naming it Bumble Bee Farm. Over the years, it became a beloved place for families and horses. In 2001, the preserve was established by The Nature Conservancy, honoring John Whitehead, a visionary leader and founder of TNC’s Rhode Island chapter.
We invite you to enjoy the Whitehead Preserve in every season, observing guidelines to protect this cherished landscape. Your contributions support our ongoing conservation efforts in Rhode Island. Visit us and discover the tranquility and natural splendor of the Whitehead Preserve at Dundery Brook.

Reviews
"Nice trails. Muddy in many areas but they have wooden walkways. Nice scenery. A must go."
"Can be a peaceful walk unless you have a few loud and screaming children ~ and they have a sign that says that DOGS disturb nature and peaceful surroundings! I salute the persons who built the "well taken care of wooden walkway"."
"The board walk was great it could have used a few more benches for people who may need to rest for a moment. I didn't see much wildlife but it was a great walk.the board walks led to other paths and one went to a pond."
"Easy trails and boardwalks. On a Sunday afternoon in late November there were very few other hikers. You can cover several miles if you go out and back each of the three interconnected trails."
