Tusculum Square
Welcome to Tusculum Square, a vibrant green oasis nestled in the heart of Kensington Avenue, Philadelphia. Located at 2713-17 Kensington Avenue, Tusculum Square is more than just a park; it is a testament to community collaboration and transformation. Once a neglected vacant lot plagued by litter and illegal dumping, this space has been revitalized into a thriving community hub, thanks to the dedicated efforts of NKCDC, Shift Capital, Hinge Collective, PennDesign, PennPraxis, and the supportive neighbors of Tusculum Street. Our journey began with engaging the local community and Penn students to reimagine the potential of this site. Through a healing-centered approach, supported by a grant from the Knight Foundation, we transformed Tusculum Square into a welcoming space for all Kensington residents. The introduction of the Kensington Wish Gallery, which debuted during Rock Ministries’ Rock the Block party, showcased the dreams and aspirations of the community through poignant portraits and personal wishes.
Lillian Marrero Library
Welcome to the Lillian Marrero Library, a cherished cornerstone of Central North Philadelphia, located at 601 West Lehigh Avenue. As part of the Free Library system, we proudly serve the vibrant communities of Fairhill, St. Edwards/Hartranft, and West Kensington with a diverse range of resources and programs. Our library offers an extensive collection of books, DVDs, and CDs, alongside free Wi-Fi, computer classes, and job search workshops. We also provide engaging programs for children and materials in Spanish, ensuring accessibility for all community members. Originally opened on November 20, 1906, with the generous support of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, our library has a rich history. The Lehigh Avenue Branch, once the largest library in Pennsylvania, has continually adapted to meet the evolving needs of its patrons. Saved from relocation in the mid-sixties, it underwent significant renovations in 1967 and 1997, enhancing its facilities and introducing Internet access as part of the "Changing Lives" campaign. The library's original chandeliers were beautifully restored during these refurbishments, preserving its historical charm.
