This innovation catalyzed the demand for mass-produced keys, leading to the invention of the reciprocating file cutter—an essential tool in key manufacturing, of which only a few rare specimens have survived.In 1895, Edmund R. Darling of Providence, Rhode Island, secured the first patent for a key machine. His invention, licensed to the Graham Manufacturing Company, was available in both hand crank and flat belt-driven models. These machines, equipped with large fiber or steel saw-type cutting wheels, ranged in size from 6" to 9" in diameter, and were pivotal in the production of keys of various shapes and sizes, tailored to different lock cylinders.Our Collection:Our museum proudly houses over 300 key machines, spanning from the 1800s to the present day. Each machine in our collection tells a story of innovation and craftsmanship, showcasing the diverse designs and engineering marvels that have shaped the locksmithing industry.
