As a proud member of the Free Library system, Bushrod Library serves the diverse communities of Oxford Circle, Castor Gardens, Upper Northwood, Summerdale, and the Lower Northeast, providing a welcoming space for learning and enrichment. The Bushrod Library has a rich history rooted in the philanthropic vision of Dr. Bushrod Washington James, a renowned Philadelphia eye surgeon and humanitarian. His legacy of community service and advocacy for education laid the foundation for the library, which opened its doors on October 25, 1950. It was the first newly constructed branch in the Free Library system since 1927, reflecting Dr. James' enduring commitment to accessible knowledge and community support.
