The sanctuary was established in 1969 by Mary and Tony Guerrero, who wanted to protect the land and wildlife from development and create an environmental education center for the community. In 1992, the Trust entered into a long-term agreement with Natural Lands to manage the property, continuing the Guerrero family's legacy.
