United American Cemetery
The United American Cemetery, located on Duck Creek Road in Cincinnati, Ohio, is a historic African American burial ground. Founded in 1883, the cemetery includes graves dating back to 1832, with prominent landscape architect Adolph Strauch designing the grounds. This resting place is home to Underground Railroad figures, writers, politicians, businesspeople, artists, Civil Rights leaders, and many military veterans, including over 55 African American veterans of the Civil War. Originally founded by the United Colored American Association, ownership was later transferred to the Union Baptist Church. Notable figures buried at United American Cemetery include Underground Railroad Conductor William H. Beckley, poet Priscilla Jane Thompson, businessman Horace Suddeth, and Civil War Corporal Henry Ellis.
