Durham Early Head Start
Durham Early Head Start (DEHS) is a school located at 1201 South Briggs Avenue in Durham, North Carolina, United States. It is a federally-funded, free, and comprehensive child development and family support program for low-income expectant women and families with infants and toddlers age birth to 3. Families can participate through home visiting or full day high-quality center-based child care. Currently, DEHS serves 136 children through center-based care and 36 children through home visiting, for a total enrollment of 172. All families receive high-quality, comprehensive services including education, health, dental, and nutritional aid, housing assistance, parent education, mental health screenings, and early intervention. DEHS collaborates with community partners to serve Durham's most vulnerable children and families. The institution is currently accepting applications and families on the waitlist from the previous year must reapply. Logan Community Day Care - Food Distribution Center is a vital institution located at 204 Booker Drive Southwest in Concord, North Carolina, United States. Originally established through the collaborative efforts of churches, organizations, and government agencies, this facility provides educational child care experiences for children from low-income families. The institution was founded by Marian W. Boyd and members of the Charlotte A. Percival Club of Federated Women, with the goal of supporting parents who may struggle to afford preschool care for their children. The first facility opened in the Logan Homes Housing Project, with Grace O’Neal as the dedicated teacher. Despite financial challenges, the daycare ensured that children did not go hungry, thanks to the generosity of local business owner Mr. Swaringen. With the support of John Larkin, the daycare obtained certification and licensing from the state of North Carolina, becoming the first licensed daycare in Cabarrus County.
