Beacham Park/Maxton, NC
β OpenBeacham Park in Maxton, North Carolina is a historic institution located at 300 South Austin Street. The park holds significance as the site where the first settlers in the area along Shoe Hill Creek and Lumber River established their homes in the 1700s. Maxton, originally known as Shoe Hill, has a rich history of name changes before finally settling on its current name in 1887 to honor the Scottish settlers in the area. Education has always been a priority in Maxton, with the establishment of Floral College in 1841 by John Gilchrist Jr. and the pioneering efforts of black educator Charles N. Hunter in opening the first school for African Americans. The town is currently seeking a Stormwater Grant to address flooding issues in specific areas, with surveyors working to create a Stormwater Master Plan.
