Bell inherited the home, where she and her husband, Ernest Bell, raised their four children. Mary was a dedicated community leader, instrumental in the survival and evolution of her church from the AME to the AMEZ denomination. In her honor, the congregation was later renamed the Bell AMEZ Church.
