Japanese Sword School
The Japanese Sword School, located at 2758 Middle Country Road in Lake Grove, New York, offers training in the Ryushin Shouchi-ryu style of swordsmanship. This small style, originating from Kyushu, involves solo kata, partner kata, and various kihon waza techniques. Led by retired Headmaster Terutaka Kawabata and current Headmaster Kunikazu Yahagi of the Seiseikan Dojo in Tokyo, the school focuses on one-handed techniques and the use of a smaller, lighter-weight sword. Training includes both solo and partner forms, providing a well-rounded education in traditional Japanese swordsmanship. The instructors, including 5th Dan Renshi Charles Barrett, bring a wealth of experience in martial arts, with expertise in Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, and other disciplines. Students can also learn from Sensei Mike and Sensei Kathy, who hold high ranks in Ryushin Shouchi-Ryu and other martial arts. Sensei Kathy, a co-founder of the school, is also skilled in Kyudo, Medical Qigong, and Tai Chi. Together, the instructors at the Japanese Sword School offer a comprehensive and authentic training experience for students of all levels.
