Originally built in 1802 as a boarding house for students, it has since been home to Hamilton Hillel, a Jewish organization on campus. The house features a meat and dairy kosher kitchen, a prayer room with a Torah Ark, and a dining room for weekly Shabbat observances and holy days. As one of the oldest buildings on campus, the Azel Backus House has a rich history dating back to its days as the residence of Hamilton College's first president, Reverend Azel Backus. Over the years, it has served various purposes including as a faculty dwelling and Alumni House. In 1984, it was renovated and named in honor of Reverend Backus.
