About the Business

Meadow Croft Estate

Welcome to Meadow Croft Estate, a hidden gem nestled at 299 Middle Road in Sayville, New York. This beautiful park offers a rare glimpse into the South Shore summer house architecture from the late 19th century. Once the summer retreat of John Ellis Roosevelt and his family, Meadow Croft features a charming 19th-century farmhouse and an exquisite 1891 addition designed by Isaac H. Green, Jr. of Sayville. The estate also includes historical structures such as a carriage house, an auto house, a caretaker's cottage, and a swimming pool.

Owned by Suffolk County and maintained by the Suffolk County Parks Department, Meadow Croft stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Bayport-Blue Point Heritage Association. Since 1984, this dedicated organization has worked tirelessly to preserve and restore the estate, transforming it into a living museum. Thanks to their efforts, visitors can enjoy the meticulously restored colonial revival garden, complete with heirloom plants, and explore the beautifully furnished interiors that reflect the estate's storied past.

Drawing from John E. Roosevelt's ledgers, family photos, and historical evidence, the Bayport-Blue Point Heritage Association has curated a furnishing report to guide the restoration of the house. The interior boasts reproduction wallpaper, carpets, and period antiques, alongside original pieces generously donated by the Roosevelt family, including a stunning grand piano. Notably, the Loughlin family returned the original dining room table and chairs, where President Theodore Roosevelt, John Roosevelt’s famous cousin, dined with the family in 1903.

Meadow Croft invites you to step back in time and experience the elegance of a bygone era. Your support helps us continue the preservation of this historical treasure. Contributions can be made to the Bayport-Blue Point Heritage Association, PO Box 4, Bayport, NY 11705. Alternatively, you can make a tax-deductible donation in an amount of your choice online. Visit us and be part of Meadow Croft's enduring legacy.

"Take a tour of the house on the weekends during the summer and early fall. This house once belonged to the Roosevelt family and was used as a vacation home. Everything is restored to circa 1910 so it's very interesting to see how they lived during this time. The grounds are the perfect place for a walk, a picnic, or to sit on the front porch and enjoy the breeze from the Great South Bay."

"The estate is beautiful and the staff are incredibly accommodating! My husband and I stumbled on this gem on the way to the nearby winery and are so glad we stopped. They gave us a private tour of the estate and the richly steeped history was amazing, as was the beautiful grand piano they so graciously let me tinker on~"
