Once home to the world's largest landfill, Freshkills Park has undergone a remarkable transformation since the landfill's closure in 2001. Today, it stands as a testament to environmental innovation, featuring engineered landscapes that support a thriving habitat for wildlife and a vibrant space for recreation, science, education, and art. While the full interior of the park is currently accessible only through scheduled park programs, these events offer exclusive opportunities for early exploration and learning. As the development of the park continues, visitors are encouraged to explore North Park Phase 1, the New Springville Greenway, the Owl Hollow Soccer Fields, and Schmul Park. Join us as we celebrate the passion for railroads that runs deep in the hearts of our volunteers, like Ellen Januszkiewicz from Orchard Park. Ellen's love for railroads is a tribute to her father, Leon, a track maintenance mechanic whose career brought their family from Scranton, PA, to the bustling rail yards of Lackawanna, NY.
