Scheide Library
● OpenWelcome to the Scheide Library, a treasured collection nestled within Princeton University’s Firestone Library at 1 Washington Road, Princeton, New Jersey. This remarkable library was generously gifted to Princeton in 2015, although its rich history dates back to 1959 when it was relocated from Titusville, Pennsylvania by William H. Scheide, an alumnus of Princeton's class of 1936. The Scheide Library is renowned for its unparalleled collection of rare books and manuscripts, including the first six printed editions of the Bible, highlighted by the iconic 1455 Gutenberg Bible—the earliest substantial European printed book. Visitors can marvel at the original printing of the Declaration of Independence, Beethoven’s autograph music sketchbook from 1815-16, and Shakespeare’s first four folios. The library also houses significant autograph music manuscripts by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Wagner, as well as a lengthy speech by Abraham Lincoln from 1856 addressing the issues of slavery, and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s original letter and telegram copy books from the closing weeks of the Civil War.
