This park was a long-awaited project that was finally realized in July 2009, after almost three decades of planning and development. Named after Nat Turner, a renowned leader of a 19th-century slave rebellion, this park was created in response to the demand for green space in Newark's Central Ward. Managed by The Trust for Public Land, Nat Turner Park serves as Newark's largest city-owned park, providing recreational opportunities for a neighborhood of 19,000 people, including 7,000 children. This park was a collaborative effort between the City of Newark, Newark Public Schools, and the Central Ward community, with The Trust for Public Land leading the fundraising, design process, and construction oversight.
