Osborn Cannonball House
The Osborn Cannonball House, located at 1840 Front Street in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, is a small yellow clapboard house with a rich history dating back to the early 1700s. Witness to events such as British and Continental troops marching past during the Revolutionary War, the Swift-Sure stage racing by in the 1800s, and generations of families calling it home, this village museum offers a glimpse into the past. The carefully constructed house features wooden pegs, plaster made of crushed oyster shells, low ceilings, and brick filled walls. Originally owned by Jonathan and Abagail Osborn, who raised thirteen children in the snug home, the house is now lovingly restored and furnished by the Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood. Visitors can explore the original wide floor boards, hand hewn ceiling beams, Victorian and Colonial furnishings, and a Colonial flower and herb garden surrounding the property. The nickname "Cannonball House" comes from a British cannonball that struck the house during the American Revolution, adding to its historical significance.
