Van Veghten House
The Van Veghten House, located at 9 Van Veghten Drive in Bridgewater, New Jersey, is a historic site that has been preserved by dedicated individuals. It is one of five colonial era homes where George Washington and his generals stayed during the second Middlebrook Encampment in the winter of 1778-1779. The house, originally built by Michael Van Veghten more than 300 years ago, has evolved over time with additions and renovations. It now serves as the headquarters of the Somerset County Historical Society. The house holds significant historical events, such as Derrick Van Veghten offering his property for the use of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The property has witnessed moments like Derrick's arrest by the British, the use of the Van Veghten Bridge in battles, and the encampment of troops during the winter layover. General Nathanael Greene, who served as Quartermaster General after the winter encampment at Valley Forge, was stationed at the Van Veghten House during the Middlebrook Encampment.
