Sandy Hook Proving Ground, located in Middletown Township, New Jersey, United States, was established in 1874 by the U.S. Ordnance Department to test new and experimental weapons. The institution played a crucial role in testing weaponry innovations introduced during the Civil War, such as rifled cannon and ironclad warships. The Proving Ground featured red brick buildings and a Proof Battery at the northeastern end of Sandy Hook, which had a 3,000 yard range for testing guns and artillery shells. The institution became a permanent installation in 1903 and continued to test weapons through World War I. However, due to the advancement of long-range guns, the facility closed in 1919 and the testing function was moved to Aberdeen, Maryland. Today, Sandy Hook Proving Ground is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground National Historic Landmark.
