About the Sandy Hook Proving Ground
Sandy Hook Proving Ground, located in Middletown Township, New Jersey, United States, was established in 1874 by the U.S. Ordnance Department to test new and experimental weapons. The institution played a crucial role in testing weaponry innovations introduced during the Civil War, such as rifled cannon and ironclad warships. The Proving Ground featured red brick buildings and a Proof Battery at the northeastern end of Sandy Hook, which had a 3,000 yard range for testing guns and artillery shells.
The institution became a permanent installation in 1903 and continued to test weapons through World War I. However, due to the advancement of long-range guns, the facility closed in 1919 and the testing function was moved to Aberdeen, Maryland. Today, Sandy Hook Proving Ground is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground National Historic Landmark.
Visitors are advised to be cautious of unexploded ordnances (UXOs) that may still be found on public beaches, as the institution saw many guns fired during its operation. It is important to not touch or move any old metallic objects and to stay out of closed areas for safety reasons. For more information on the history of the Sandy Hook Proving Ground, visitors can access various resources available online.

Reviews of Sandy Hook Proving Ground
"Pretty good food and service but the view is the real draw. Love sitting outside on a warm summer day. If you go in the evening try to snag a table with a fire pit."
"Sandy hook is a beautiful place and interesting piece of history. I drive out there from pa to fish there. I love it there."
"He be better off on PC glued And it's a feud so don't be in no TV mood Every week it's mystery meat, seaweed stewed"
"Close, yet far away. A short drive from NYC and north Jersey, a pleasant spot to hike, unfold a camp chair and read the afternoon away. Check out the roaring surf on one side and enjoy the placid bay on the other side. And when hunger makes you think of lunch or dinner, just across the bridge to the mainland there are some great sea food restaurants. A favorite getaway of mine, this Sandy Hook."
