As a proud testament to maritime history, the United States Lightship Barnegat (LV-79/WAL-506) invites you to explore its storied past and unique legacy. Built in 1904 by the New York Shipbuilding Company right here in Camden, this remarkable vessel has served as a guardian of the sea, guiding sailors safely through treacherous waters. Initially stationed at Five Fathom Bank near Cape May, the lightship later took on roles as a relief vessel and served at the Barnegat Lighthouse station. During World War II, it played a crucial role as an examination vessel on the Delaware River. Decommissioned in 1967, the Barnegat found a temporary home at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum before becoming a cherished part of Camden's maritime heritage.
