"On August 31, 2023, I called Giles CPA in response to a job-posting for a bookkeeper role on Indeed. The gatekeeper put me through to Giles and we talked for about 30 minutes. He was friendly, seemed impressed with my MBA, and shared that he had been looking for someone to apprentice him directly so that he could retire. (He had a succession plan in place, but it fell through for whatever reasons.) So, he instructed me to submit a resume over Indeed (as a formality) and call him after the September 15th tax deadline to arrange a physical interview. I followed his instructions but when I tried to call (twice on the 15th), I couldn’t get past the gatekeeper. So, I left a message for him. No one from his firm ever got back with me. Completely dropping the ball, after offering me an apprenticeship with the potential to succeed him as owner doesn’t exactly characterize integrity. If I had to guess (which is all I can do, given his lack of communication), I would bet that an heir (the succession plan that fell through) re-expressed interest and Giles conceded despite evidence of responsibility or qualifications. In my macroeconomics textbook I remember the two primary reasons for the persistence of bad management: (1) absence of competition and (2) primogeniture, which is the tendency of family-owned firms to appoint the family’s oldest son as CEO regardless of objective qualifications. Authors Bloom and Van Reenen found that firms with eldest sons as CEO’s were more likely to obtain poor management grades. Well, it’s little wonder most firms don’t succeed their founders. Integrity, trust, and meritocracy turn out to matter."
