"Just passed by on Amtrak. Open pit Mine with an underground portal seems to be partly managed or owned by UnitedFSI. May be a coal powered plant or was it looks very clean and less busy for an operation outside of St. Louis having worked as an Underground Mine Operator myself in the Colorado Rockies and studied at the Colorado School of Mines. Update: This plant was a gas and coal powered plant that was retired in 2022. I am not sure why could be safety and health, could be the mine dried up or it was no longer economically feasible whatever the case might’ve been. The pit is an ash pond and it seems to have been highly polluting the area as a previous user claimed five years ago. In any case I do want to stress the importance of power plants and our interdependence on natural resources like coal especially around the Midwest which is still in large part apart of the energy portfolio of the region. That said renewables and nuclear are great alternatives to diversify but in that same rhythm those too come at a cost of what cannot be grown must be mined. I’ve built natural gas plants in east TX and Polysilicon Plants in TN that are dependent on natural resources to produce energy or to refine materials for energy produce applications as is the case with Polysilicon which is used for solar panels and chips for all our technologies. The more you know supply chains are complicated and how the world works to energize our spaces for the modern world and power innovation on our MacBooks and iPhones is even more complicated. The United FSI sign I saw at the plant ironically is a supply chain and logistics company in St. Louis. I believe there is knowledge to be gained in learning how things work to better understand and empathize with communities to building solutions that always come with a trade off. Anyways cool thing to see passing on the Amtrak back to Chicago."
"Been providing electricity to the stl area since 1955."
"Wouldn't be able to write this review without it, so, simple."
"This COAL burning plant should be shut down due to it’s proximity to a large population of people. This plant pollutes South County air every day it operates."
"i have no idea why im reviewing this, ive never been there and no nothing about nuclear power but i guess its cool"
