The academy was established in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Luke Weathers Jr., the first African American air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) based at Memphis International Airport. Lt. Col. Weathers was also the first African American to receive the key to the City of Memphis, declaring a day in his honor.
