Asylum Hill, located at 2500 North State Street in Jackson, Mississippi, is a university that houses the Asylum Hill Cemetery, a historic site that was once part of the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum. The cemetery, now part of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, contains as many as 7,000 graves of patients who were buried there between 1855 and 1935. The Asylum Hill Research Consortium was formed to oversee the possible exhumation, study, and respectful memorialization of those buried on the UMMC campus. The consortium is currently gathering historical documents and collecting oral histories to learn more about the asylum and its patients.
