Coldwater Spring
β ClosedColdwater Spring, located at 5601 Minnehaha Park Drive South in Saint Paul, Minnesota, is a park and tourist attraction that was added to the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area in 2010. The goal of Coldwater Spring is to restore the landscape to an oak savanna/prairie complex, with extensive renovation work being completed in 2012. The area has a rich history, serving as a crossroads for Native Americans and traders, and later as the site of Fort Snelling, the first American settlement in Minnesota. The spring provided water to the fort and later the Upper Post, with a formal waterworks system being established in 1880. The property was later home to the Bureau of Mines: Twin Cities Research Center, which developed mining safety equipment and analyzed moon rocks brought back by the Apollo missions. The buildings were vacated in 1997 and demolished in 2011. Today, Coldwater Spring offers a crushed limestone trail for walking, wildlife viewing, and birdwatching opportunities. Visitors can see turkeys, deer, coyotes, and native wildflowers blooming throughout the season. The park is a peaceful and historic destination in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
