Disability Advocates of Kent County is a non-profit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities gain control over their lives. Founded in 1981 by individuals with disabilities, our organization offers personalized support and assistance to ensure accessibility on a personal level. We serve the Kent, Ionia, Montcalm, Mecosta, and Osceola areas, providing occupational therapists to assess equipment needs and support individuals in finding housing. Our unique perspective, with 75% of our board and 56% of our staff being individuals living with disabilities, allows us to offer valuable knowledge and experience to our constituents. We work to eliminate systemic barriers and enhance programs so that people with disabilities can live the self-directed life they choose. Through our Absolutely Accessible Kent program, we offer transit advocacy, education, technical assistance on accessibility, and Universal Design to create a more inclusive community.
