Labassa Mansion
Labassa Mansion, located at Caulfield North, Manor Grove, 2, is a captivating Victorian-era institution that stands as a testament to Australia's rich architectural history. Originally known as 'Sylliott Hill', the mansion was later renamed 'Ontario' in the 1880s to reflect the Canadian heritage of its new owner, Alexander William Robertson. Under Robertson's ownership, Labassa underwent a transformation into a magnificent thirty-five roomed mansion, thanks to the expertise of German-born architect John A. B. Koch, who redesigned the house in the French Second Empire style. Labassa's interior is adorned with opulent features such as gilt embossed wallpapers, intricate stained glass, and a rare trompe l’oeil ceiling. In 1904, the mansion was renamed Labassa and became the residence of Melbourne's elite until 1920, when it was converted into flats. Over the years, Labassa has been home to a diverse range of residents, including Hollywood's first Australian silent film star and other bohemian individuals. Today, Labassa stands as one of the few surviving nineteenth-century mansions, with its main rooms meticulously restored to their former glory, leaving visitors in awe of its grandeur.
