About Labassa Mansion
Labassa Mansion, located at Caulfield North, Manor Grove, 2, is a captivating Victorian-era institution that stands as a testament to Australia's rich architectural history. Originally known as 'Sylliott Hill', the mansion was later renamed 'Ontario' in the 1880s to reflect the Canadian heritage of its new owner, Alexander William Robertson. Under Robertson's ownership, Labassa underwent a transformation into a magnificent thirty-five roomed mansion, thanks to the expertise of German-born architect John A. B. Koch, who redesigned the house in the French Second Empire style.
Labassa's interior is adorned with opulent features such as gilt embossed wallpapers, intricate stained glass, and a rare trompe l’oeil ceiling. In 1904, the mansion was renamed Labassa and became the residence of Melbourne's elite until 1920, when it was converted into flats. Over the years, Labassa has been home to a diverse range of residents, including Hollywood's first Australian silent film star and other bohemian individuals. Today, Labassa stands as one of the few surviving nineteenth-century mansions, with its main rooms meticulously restored to their former glory, leaving visitors in awe of its grandeur.
In 2013, Labassa hosted a reunion for over 135 former residents, owners, and their descendants, sparking an ongoing research project into the mansion's fascinating history spanning 143 years. From 1862 to 1920, Labassa housed a succession of prosperous families, and after that, it became a residence for individuals of more modest means, including socialites, war heroes, Jewish refugees, and bohemian artists. To delve into the stories and ongoing research, visitors can explore the Labassa Lives Journal, meticulously compiled by historian Vicki Shuttleworth.
Labassa's interiors are a testament to exquisite craftsmanship, featuring Japanese-inspired embossed wallpapers, ebonised furniture, tiles, and stained glass. The mansion's principal rooms showcase an impressive display of Japanese kimonos, cloisone, and porcelains, providing visitors with a glimpse into Labassa's unique Japanese influences.
Visitors can choose to wander through the house at their own pace or join a guided tour, which takes place every hour from 11 am to 3 pm. For those interested in exploring the tower, tours are available at specific times throughout the day, accommodating a maximum of 12 people per group. It is advisable to wear sensible shoes due to the tower's narrow and steep steps.
Labassa's significance in popular culture is not to be missed. The recent ABC series "Gold Diggers" chose Labassa as a filming location, further highlighting its historical charm. In a special event, visitors can learn about the real gold diggers of Labassa, individuals who made their fortunes through various means, including mining and entrepreneurial endeavors. This immersive experience begins with refreshments at 6.30 pm, followed by a talk and guided house tour, showcasing how gold transformed Labassa from a modest villa to one of Australia's most lavishly decorated mansions.
For those interested in a self-guided tour, an information brochure is available. However, please note that stilettos are not permitted inside the mansion. Additionally, visitors are advised not to park in Manor Grove.
Labassa hosts a series of events throughout the year, and it is open to the public every third Sunday of the month. Visitors can also learn about the "Return to Labassa" project, which aims to uncover more information about the mansion's recent past and its previous tenants. Samantha Westbrooke, a Conservation Architect for the National Trust, offers a tour of the Labassa Towers project, showcasing the ongoing restoration work at Labassa.
In an effort to preserve Victoria's heritage, Labassa acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout the region and pays respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, as well as the Elders past and present.

"Stunning historical mansion, open days are held every third Sunday, best to book tickets in advance. The guides conduct tours of the house every hour, but you can explore on your own. Team room cafe in the courtyard has some lovely scones and cake."
"We went to Labassa for a crime solving show. My wife had booked in advance. There was a very large group of people we were all divided into groups based on roles allocated while we waited outside. We when went to a room with the actor playing the role of team leader where we were given our task, solve a murder. We were given some clues and then had to roam the building to solve the murder. The actors were all great. We had s great time. Highly recommended!"
