Orenda Wildlife Sanctuary
Orenda Wildlife Sanctuary is a park and tourist attraction located at 1530 Main Street in Barnstable, Massachusetts, United States. Our mission is to preserve and protect open space for wildlife habitat, fresh air, and water quality in sanctuaries on Cape Cod and throughout Massachusetts. With over 60 sanctuaries covering 730 acres, we work to ensure the land is preserved for everyone, forever. The word "Orenda" comes from the language of the Iroquois indigenous people, meaning "extraordinary, powerful, life energy within all beings and their environment". Founded in 1986 by Barbara Birdsey, a nationally-acclaimed philanthropist and wildlife protection advocate, Orenda shares its mission through public education, special events, and policy forums on wildlife issues.
Sheriff's Meadow Foundation
Sheriff's Meadow Foundation is a park and tourist attraction located at 57 David Avenue in Tisbury, Massachusetts, United States. The foundation's mission is to protect and preserve watersheds, natural areas, trails, and wildlife habitat through ecological management, agriculture, and community connections. One of their exciting projects is the Eben Horton Glass Float Project in collaboration with MV Glassworks, where hand-crafted glass floats are hidden across their conservation properties for an island-wide treasure hunt called "Treasure on the Trails". This fun activity allows visitors to explore the beautiful protected lands of Martha's Vineyard while searching for hidden treasures. The final wave of the hunt for 2023 begins on December 23rd, just in time for winter break. Visitors can find 25 hidden floats wrapped in burlap, with a special holiday treat of a set of posters featuring artwork by Rez Williams for those who find a float tied with an icy blue ribbon. To navigate the trails and participate in the treasure hunt, visitors are encouraged to download the free TrailsMV mobile app. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to discover hidden treasures while enjoying the natural beauty of Sheriff's Meadow Foundation's conservation properties.
Tantiusques
Tantiusques is a historic park and tourist attraction located at 493 Leadmine Road in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, United States. Visitors can follow a loop trail through quiet woodlands and explore the site of a former lead mine that was used by Indigenous peoples and later by European settlers. The name "Tantiusques" comes from a Nipmuc word meaning "to a black deposit between two hills," reflecting the site's history as one of New England's first mines. The Nipmuc tribe originally mined graphite at Tantiusques to make paints, and in 1644, John Winthrop, Jr. purchased the mine with hopes of extracting lead and iron. The site has a rich history, with Frederick Tudor shipping around 30 tons of graphite per year to Boston between 1829 and 1860. Visitors can explore the mine cut along the ridge, which is a partially filled-in trench that once followed the vein of graphite.
Berkshire Trout Hatchery - Hatchery Building
The Berkshire Trout Hatchery, located at 240 Hatchery Road in New Marlborough, Massachusetts, is a vital institution dedicated to the restoration of lake trout populations in the Lower Great Lakes. Operated by the Berkshire Hatchery Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, this hatchery plays a crucial role in supplying lake trout eggs to federal hatcheries for hatching, growing, and stocking in Lakes Ontario and Erie as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. With a focus on re-establishing sustainable, healthy populations of native lake trout, the Berkshire Trout Hatchery produces over 1.2 million fertilized Seneca lake wild strain lake trout annually. These conservation efforts not only benefit the lake trout population and habitat but also provide recreational fishing opportunities for anglers in the area.
