Explore Diverse Habitats and Wildlife
Rising from 690 feet at the Williamstown parking lot to over 1,100 feet, the Preserve boasts diverse natural habitats and rich ecology. It's a sanctuary for a wide array of wildlife, including bears, coyotes, bobcats, foxes, and deer, along with wetland amphibians and numerous small mammals and reptiles. The meadow's vibrant mix of flowers and grasses, like aster, little bluestem, and fringed gentian, attracts a variety of butterflies, offering a kaleidoscope of colors and life.
Scenic Trails and Breathtaking Views
Embark on four miles of picturesque trails and create unforgettable memories as you witness butterflies dance on wildflowers or hear the iconic cry of a red-tailed hawk soaring above. From the broad meadow, just beyond the parking lot, enjoy stunning views of the Hoosac Valley, showcasing Williamstown's church spires and the majestic Mount Greylock.
For those seeking adventure, climb the half-mile loop trail to a hilltop, or continue your journey into the Pownal, Vermont side of the reservation. Prefer a leisurely stroll? Enter from the Pownal parking lot and wander along flat trails leading to the historic ruins of Mausert’s Camp, a rustic family getaway from the 1970s.
Plan Your Visit
Please be aware that parking lots are infrequently plowed in winter, making access challenging after a storm. We recommend photographing the map on your phone or downloading a trail map before your visit.

"Nice trails. Started from pownal side and no difficult challenges. Then went to williamstown side and did the meadow loop. Very relaxing time even with heat and humidity"
"Nice Forest to go for a walk. Aerobic climb up part of a mountain but not overly challenging. Nice meadows."
"Nice quiet spot. Easy to locate. Make sure you bring plenty of bug spray! The Flys can be awful. Some trails are really steep."
"Cute little nature preserve with some easy to moderate hiking trails. Meadow loop is very easy, anyone of all ages can do it, but the ground is a bit uneven. Tons of butterflies when the milkweed is blooming. A variety of birds to watch. The summit trail can be really steep at parts."
"We stumbled upon the website for The Trustees when we were looking for a way to pass some time and found the Mountain Meadow on our route. Amazing spot to view a native meadow. Great well-maintained trails throughout the property. If you like wildflowers, hiking, ecology, or just want a quiet place to hike, this is a great stop."
