Fort Andrews
β OpenFort Andrews, located on Peddocks Island in the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, was established in 1897 as part of the Endicott System of Coastal Defenses. Unlike traditional masonry forts, Fort Andrews consisted of support buildings and batteries equipped with modern artillery. During World War II, the fort housed members of the Italian Service Unit, a group of Italian POWs who pledged allegiance to the United States. Today, the Guardhouse serves as the Peddocks Island Visitor Center, while most of the buildings are closed to the public. The restoration of the Guardhouse and Chapel cost $12 million, and there are currently no plans for further renovations. Visit the Touring Fort Andrews web page for more information about the fort's history and structures.
