Hackerman House

After a major refurbishment in 2018, the house reopened with a new installation that reflects on the history of the building and its residents. The current exhibition is inspired by a letter written during the Civil War by Sybby Grant, an enslaved woman who worked as a cook for the Thomas family and lived in the house from 1850 to 1888. Contemporary artists Roberto Lugo and Herb Massie collaborated with the Baltimore community to create artworks that respond to Sybby Grant's story, the history of race in the United States, and works in the Walters collection. The first floor of Hackerman House features an ornate double parlor showcasing bronzes by Antoine-Louis Barye, known for his animal sculptures, as well as pieces from the Majolica Mania exhibition.
