Heaters Island Wildlife Management Area
● OpenHeater's Island Wildlife Management Area is a park and tourist attraction located in Tuscarora, Maryland, United States. Accessible only by boat, this island in the Potomac River is a forested haven for wildlife. Once home to a Piscataway tribe, the island is now inhabited by wild turkeys, waterfowl, deer, and other animals. Dierssen Wildlife Management Area
● OpenDierssen Wildlife Management Area is a 40-acre tract of marshy woodland located in Potomac, Maryland, between the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath and the Potomac River. Donated to the State by the Dierssen family for use as a waterfowl sanctuary, this area is managed by the Wildlife and Heritage Service. As a designated wildlife sanctuary, hunting and trapping are not allowed on the property. Accessible by boat or via the C&O Canal Towpath, Dierssen WMA provides habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, songbirds, and furbearers. This area is part of Maryland's Department of Natural Resources public land system, with a primary mission to conserve wildlife populations and habitats while providing recreational opportunities. Funding for Maryland's state wildlife programs comes from hunting license fees and federal aid, including the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Fund. Other sources of funds include Program Open Space for parks and conservation areas. The Department of Natural Resources is committed to securing a sustainable future for Maryland's natural resources.
