About the Business

Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge is located at 17160 Chef Menteur Highway in New Orleans, Louisiana. This park offers free nature walks and programs on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Ridge Trail, a 2/3-mile-long interpretive boardwalk trail through a forest and wetland area. Binoculars are available for borrowing for all programs, and visitors can relax at the Ridge Trail to observe local songbirds.
The refuge, established in 1990, features a variety of wildlife habitats including forests, marshes, lagoons, and bayous. Visitors can enjoy activities such as fishing, hiking, bird watching, and nature photography. The refuge also offers interpretive and educational programs for all ages.
The staff at Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge use various resource management techniques to maintain and enhance the habitats for native plants and wildlife. The refuge is part of the Urban Bird Treaty Program and aims to enhance populations of migratory, shore, and wading birds within its boundaries.
One of the key objectives of the refuge is to provide opportunities for fish and wildlife-dependent public uses and recreation in an urban setting. The refuge also plays a role in protecting east New Orleans from hurricane storm surge.
Visitors can explore the diverse habitats of the refuge, which support over 340 species of birds, as well as fish and other wildlife. Restoration projects, such as the Ridge project, aim to restore damaged areas of the refuge and involve local schoolchildren and community volunteers in planting trees and removing invasive species.
Overall, Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and experience wildlife in an urban setting. Whether you're interested in bird watching, hiking, or simply enjoying the outdoors, this refuge has something to offer for everyone.

"Saw some bird, ducks and lizards. We went in February, not so much to see. The beginning there were a few wasp. Has signs with info, all and all it was nice to walk around. I would say it’s about less than a mile long. If you want to see the Castle, you need to cross or park across the street."
"Beautiful boardwalks through various wetlands. Plants are labeled so I learned something new. Year round access. Great experience."
"Nothing much to see during December. We only saw one rabbit and that’s about it. Restoration work was on going but it could be really nice place if it’s done nicely. There wasn’t restroom available when we went in December 2022."
"Absolutely gorgeous views from the levee entering Little Irish Bayou. While you're there stop by the gas station at I-10 for drinks and grab a taco from the man in a taco truck... Delicious authentic tacos!"
"I have stopped here the 3 times I have been in the area. I have seen gators all three times at the boat ramp off hwy 10. I loved the boardwalk as well"
