Derryounce Lakes and Walkways
Welcome to Derryounce Lakes and Walkways, a hidden gem located in Derryvilla, Co. Offaly, Ireland. Originally used for sod peat production, this area played a vital role in supplying peat to the old power station in Portarlington. After decades of peat production, the remaining cutaway bog was transformed into a stunning conifer plantation by Coillte. However, in the 1980s, industrial peat production ceased, and the landscape underwent a remarkable transformation. With the lowering of ground levels, a basin was formed in the central area, which eventually became the beautiful Lough Lurgan after the pumps were turned off. This flooded area is now a picturesque lake that adds to the charm of Derryounce Lakes and Walkways.

Over 360 lives were lost, and this devastating event inspired the erection of the Beacon Towers in 1821, where the Metalman stands watch over the bay. Halfway along the walk, you'll also find the old coast guard cannon, positioned on an outcrop atop the cliff, offering stunning views of the bay.
