They have provided convenient parking facilities, picnic tables, and clear direction signs leading to the summit, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable visit for all. Mooghaun Hill Fort has gained a well-deserved reputation as one of the most impressive prehistoric fortifications in the country. However, it is also widely recognized for an extraordinary event that took place nearby in March of 1854. Derryounce Lakes and Walkways
Welcome to Derryounce Lakes and Walkways, a hidden gem located in Derryvilla, Co. Offaly, Ireland. This unique institution holds a rich history that dates back to the mid-20th Century when it was purchased by Bord na Móna as part of their greater Clonsast group of bogs. Originally used for sod peat production, this area played a vital role in supplying peat to the old power station in Portarlington. After decades of peat production, the remaining cutaway bog was transformed into a stunning conifer plantation by Coillte. However, in the 1980s, industrial peat production ceased, and the landscape underwent a remarkable transformation. With the lowering of ground levels, a basin was formed in the central area, which eventually became the beautiful Lough Lurgan after the pumps were turned off. This flooded area is now a picturesque lake that adds to the charm of Derryounce Lakes and Walkways.
