Indiana Dunes National Park Chellberg Farm
The Indiana Dunes National Park Chellberg Farm is a historic site located at 709-747 North Mineral Springs Road in Porter, Indiana. This farm tells the story of a hardworking Swedish immigrant family who lived and worked here for three generations. The farmhouse represents a typical 1890 through 1910 Swedish and Northwestern Indiana farmstead, with the brick farmhouse built in 1885. The National Park Service restored the farmhouse to its turn of the 20th century appearance, except for the dining room modified by the Chellbergs in the 1920s. The Chellberg family, consisting of Anders and Johanna Chellberg and their children, established the farm in 1869 and expanded it to 80 acres by 1874. The farm was passed down through generations until it was sold to the National Park Service in 1972. Visitors can explore the farmhouse, which includes rooms like the kitchen, pantry, and parlor, showcasing how the family lived and worked without modern conveniences.
