Shadyside Memorial Park Chinese Gardens

Originally opened in 1897 as a private park for employees of the Union Traction Company, the park was dedicated to all Madison County war veterans in 1923 when the City of Anderson purchased it and opened it to the public. The park features the Terraced Gardens, originally constructed as Japanese Gardens by nurseryman Milton H. Gaar in 1928, as well as the Bear Caves built by the Works Progress Administration in 1933. In the late 1990s, renovations were made to the park, including the creation of a botanical walk, amphitheater, and Veterans Commons. The park also offers a regional playground, trail access to Shadyside Recreation Area and the White River Trail System, and is home to the Shadyside Little League. Picnic shelters and tables are available for larger gatherings, and the concrete amphitheater provides hillside seating for events.
